Three point turn

Just when you think "here we go again - Wardonkey's going to take Agent of the Month award again in the last week", long-time leader Poots rallies and closes the gap back down to just three points with just three days remaining.

This sort of tussle will get seasoned FFA campaigners dewy-eyed over the classic AotM battles between Wardonkey and quizking, but where's the FFA champion this month - languishing in fifth with, oh yes, me!

League Cup action has seen a lot of the big stars rested, but it's a return to champions League action next week, so players from the big four should be looking to go big on the midweeks. October also brings another international break - and we all know how crazy the scoring goes then.

Transfer Tuesday saw two players leaving to go the championship on loan: Christian Dailly and Derby's Michael Johnson (our scoring computer Zen being particularly relieved about the latter following numerous confusions with his Manchester City namesake).

Life after Mourinho

Well it's been a week more about managers than players, well one manager in particular.

Jose Mourinho's departure was a bit like when the Queen Mum died, you sort of knew it was going to happen at some point but it was still surprising when it did.

It's meant those agents who had Andriy Shevchenko (who was a steal last week at £175) filled their boots points-wise. Chelsea players should prove to be a wise investment over the coming weeks if rumours of player unrest are true. And even if they're not they still score points for being involved in rumours.

In the league this month Poots is still holding on to his lead, just. Wardonkey has chased him down to just 10 points. New month starts on Monday.

Boom or bust

The international break has a big effect on FFA scores; while the big names and those battling for spare places in the England squad are scoring highly nearly everyone else is in the doldrums.

This polarisation of points, together with a general slow down after the transfer window and the start of the season, will see a lot of values slip downwards this Friday.

This could be a chance to pick up some bargains. For example, it looks very likely that Cristiano Ronaldo will dip down to £250, which is a very keen price for a regular high points getter.

In the table this month, Poots has taken a step forward. A regular in the chasing pack, he's taken full advantage of the internationals and built a solid lead that should at least take him to the half way mark.

Who knows if he'll be able to hold on to it; the Premier League returns on Saturday and with it a wider spread of points.

No English talent

Something is definitely afoot. The FA seem to be setting the barricades up in case England fall on their collective backsides next week. Tapping in to the tabloid conscience it seems perfectly acceptable to blame foreigners for the state of affairs of the game.

The fact of the matter is we do have talent - bundles of it, the problems come in our inability to manage it. English talent is prized by the top clubs - even by clubs like Arsenal. The sad fact of the matter is whenever you see rumours of player unrest, tapping up and outrageous wage demands, nine times out of ten the culprits are English.

Blaming foreign imports still doesn't explain the failure of the national team to take apart weaker opposition. Trindad and Tobago held out for almost 80 minutes with a team of players that would mostly struggle to hold down a place in a League One side. And this isn't the only case.

Foreign imports don't change the way Frank Lampard plays when he puts on his England shirt. Foreign players don't convert Steve Gerrard from a thrusting attacking midfielder to a water-carrier. England's problems lie much deeper than the increase in competition for places in top flight domestic football.

Anyway, rant over before this turns into some kind of blog. Well done all of you who put Emile Heskey into your portfolio, good luck to him I say.

And so to buck the trend this week's Transfer Tuesday sees us welcoming three English Matthews into the game - Messrs Taylor, Derbyshire and Etherington. The transfer deadline casualties taken from the list are Jason Euell, Paul Dickov and Stern John.
