The Big Match

This coming weekend is going to be dominated by the meeting of the top two. Arsenal v Manchester United has been ridiculously over-hyped by Sky, but it should prove to be a point bonanza.

Rarely without controversy, these games keep the headline makers busy for days - giving the big names a steady stream of points in the days leading up to and following. My money's on a draw - but i don't think we'll see either side settle for a draw as readily as Liverpool did last Sunday.

Carling Cup action this week, but returns on this competition haven't been amazing so it may not be worth chopping and changing on the off-chance of points.

I think I can be pretty confident in congratulating backrubslut with his steller performance to win this month's Agent of the Month. Yes, there is a day to go, and yes, anything could happen, but let's face it - it won't. A new month starts on Thursday - it could be your month this time!

Transfer Tuesday sees us lose two players loaned out to Championship sides. Kasper Schmeichal and Collins John leave the game. Sunderland's goal getter, Kenwyne Jones, joins the game.

Half term holiday

According to the powers that be Mark Clattenburg is on holiday this weekend. Stevie G's 9 points for yesterday says otherwise.

The England vice-captain's protestations may or may not have directly influenced the referee to send Tony Hibbert off, but either way it's a far cry from the days when Robbie Fowler pleaded with a ref NOT to send David Seaman off when Liverpool played Arsenal.

English players still dominate the scoring following their Euro 2008 defeat to Russia, with Joleon Lescott becoming a firm favourite with the Agents in the top 20 (check out the favourite selctions option on the players stats page).

It's back to Champions League action this week so expect big things from the players from the big four. Man U and Arsenal play tonight, Chelsea and Liverpool tomorrow.

Looking at the table this month backrubslut is well placed to claim his second Agent of the Month award after the mighty Wardonkey found the going tough over the international break - it must have been the plastic pitch. BRS has a big lead - but we've seen Wardo eat those up before.

Stay tuned.

PS No transfers today, maybe i'll add a couple more next week - any suggestions?

Plastic peril

If you've been reading the press of late it would appear that plastic pitches are a greater threat than third world debt and global warming combined.

According to some sources it's very likely that half the England team could spontaneously explode as soon as they set foot on the fake turf of Moscow tomorrow night.

The scrutinity of the playing surface still hasn't taken attention away from the players - their fitness (both physical and ability) and matters of selection. Gareth Barry can cement his place in the midfield (certainly until Owen Hargreaves is fit at least) with a good display against Russia. Where this leaves big-boned Frank Lampard is anyone's guess.

If you want my opinion the choice of Steve Gerrard over Frank is a political one. Gerrard has the more natural talent but Frank has the greater work-rate (I'm generalising massively, of course). I reckon Frank is more likely to fight for his place than Steve, who would be under severe pressure from Rafa to retire from international duty if he wasn't getting a regular gig.

Transfer Tuesday brings Scotland's goal scoring hero James McFadden to the game. If you want the Evertonian in your portfolio you'll need to free up £175.

Another international week

More knockabout fun in the shape of Euro qualifiers this coming week, which regular players will recognise as the time when English players in the game score by the bucketload.

As in real football the English players are valued far more than their talents suggest which makes them a big investment in this game. But come weeks like this and you can almost guarantee Michael Owen netting you 60 points plus before he's even kicked a ball.

With the transfer window a long way off these rest weeks will mean little to those players not involved in international action - unless of course they're on the name and shame list for that nurses chairty.

A quick note: our scoring computer Zen had a minor hiccup last week. He got so excited by Man U's untimely exit from the Carling Cup he gave the United players in that game bonus points for the next few days. If you were lucky enough to have Carrick, Brown, Anderson or Nani - well done. He'll try not to do it again.

Wardonkey steals it at the last

Agent of the month for August and September and already setting the pace for this month, last season's runner-up Wardonkey is the man to beat this campaign.

Your heart has to go out to poor Poots: having led for the majority of September he went into the last day with a slender five point lead only to be pipped by just ONE point.

It's a cruel, cruel game.

So how can you challenge the mighty Wardo? Well we've added a couple of features that might just help you. The Players stats page now has a couple of new functions to see what's going on in the game.

The player tracker function shows how each player has performed over the last three months, perfect for spotting over-valued players or sleeping giants.

The top picks feature allows you to see which players the top agents are picking at the moment. You might be surprised as to who is topping the table.

Transfer Tuesday sees two of the big names from Saturday's goal feast at Fratton Park. Welcome to the game hat-trick hero Benjani and Reading goalie Marcus Hahnemann.
